Alan Johnston

Premier, WV

A lifelong resident of McDowell County, Alan finds inspiration for his original songs in the history and legend of the county. His McDowell County Project CD features “Muddy Water” - his tale of the tragic 2001 and 2002 floods in the county. Music is a family affair for Alan as he makes music with his three daughter and sings the stories of the “Free State of McDowell.”

Beatrice Hagerman

Bradshaw Mountain, WV

This unassuming McDowell County native has spent her life making charming handcrafted items, while passing along her knowledge to her daughter, Geneva Manes. Her crocheted baby blankets are particular favorites at local festivals. Each Christmas season, she and her husband create the famous Hilltop Lights display, which draws several thousand people to their remote location on Bradshaw mountain.

Brady Mullins

Jolo, WV

Brady’s unique wood furniture and accessories begins with walnut, cherry, and oak from his own land. “When I start on a candle holder, it just sort of makes itself,” he says. His work includes everything from cradles and candle holders to grandfather clocks. This McDowell County artisan is an Ashland Company Store exclusive. He welcomes your custom order.

Geneva Manes

Rockridge, WV

When Geneva says, “I like to keep busy,” that hardly begins to describe her prolific production of handmade quilts and samplers, her whimsical painted rocks, her delicious jams, jellies, and candies. Her creations have won many blue ribbons at the West Virginia State Fair. She keeps alive her family traditions with her craft sales at festivals and is an active member of the TBAI business development group.
Opal Wilson

Welch, WV

Opal is well known in McDowell County for her handmade items - quilts, crocheted baby sweaters and blankets, aprons and kitchen towels. Practicing her craft since 1934, Opal is still a regular at craft festivals in West Virginia and nearby states. Ashland Company Store is proud to sell the work of this experienced local artisan.

Geneva Steele

Paynesville, WV

Geneva has traced and written about her local family roots back to the 18th century. As an artist, she loves beautifying her world with colorful flowers and scenes painted on everything from rocks to old satellite dishes. Look for her “crazy quilt” and colorful West Virginia quilt in the Ashland Company Store. We are proud to offer quilts and handpainted “Welcome Friends” rocks of this true daughter of McDowell County.
